Celebrating the life of

Dennis Wayne Mistoler

February 26, 1948 - March 28, 2025

Dennis Wayne Mistoler

Dennis Wayne Mistoler, 77, passed away on Friday, March 28, 2025 at his home in Bluffton, South Carolina while under the loving care of his immediate family. Dennis was best known for the love he had for his family, his neighbors, and his gardening. He is preceded in death by his mother Birdie Yelverton Mistoler, 85, sister Frances Lou Mistoler Thompson, 73, niece Julia Sue Thompson, 3, brother Jimmy Dean Yelverton, 29, sister Betty Jean Mistoler Irving, 75, and sister Marsha Gail Mistoler Reid, 67.

Dennis was born in Many, Louisiana on February 26, 1948 and spent most of his childhood in Amite City, Louisiana. He graduated from Amite High School in 1966 before attending Southeastern Louisiana University with a football scholarship as a placekicker. After graduating with a B.S. in Chemistry, he achieved an M.S. in Food Chemistry at Louisiana State University in 1972. Dennis began his career with Luxury Pasta in New Orleans where he met his wife-to-be Kathleen Margaret Roughen. The two were introduced through a mutual friend and immediately formed a connection between souls. After taking a position with General Mills, Dennis moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa along with Kathleen where the two were soon married in 1974. The Blizzard of 1977 encouraged the young couple to seek the warm weather of Orlando, Florida, and there Dennis began working with Frito-Lay before making the plunge into the emerging field of computer science. His studies at Florida Technological University, now known as the University of Central Florida, earned him various positions working under military contracts to develop anti-submarine defenses and P-3 aircraft simulators. He and Kathleen then had their first child Stephen in 1987 and their second son Garrett in 1993, the fatherhood of both he considered to be the greatest career path of his life. After many successful years, Dennis retired to Bluffton, South Carolina where his green thumb blossomed.

Dennis is survived by his wife Kathleen Roughen Mistoler, son Stephen Michael Mistoler (Ana Chavarro), son Garrett Patrick Mistoler, sister Mary Sue Mistoler Johnson, brother Leonard Havis Mistoler, sister Carolyn Ann Mistoler, and many nieces and nephews.

The family and friends of Dennis give thanks to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry and Mirasol Health for their invaluable support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to these wonderful organizations.

The visitation and funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 2nd beginning at 12:00pm at the Islands Chapel of Fox & Weeks Funeral Home. The interment will take place at 2:30pm at Bonaventure Cemetery following the ceremony. The pallbearers for the service will be Matthew Roughen, Daniel Roughen, Joel Chavarro, Agostinho Martins, Brian Lucas, and Pike Hamlin.
